Sticky Chicks

I’ve hatched a few eggs before this time, two ducks (set two, both hatched), and a chicken - (set one, one hatched). They all went off without a hitch. Duck eggs were from a local farm for eating and I decided to try it; chicken egg was from my neighbor with a roo…all fairly local / no shipping.

This weekend, I hatched four that were shipped from CT to IN. Started with six, lost one to a leaking crack upon arrival, another didn’t develop. I set them upright for a day before incubation to get the air cell right. Three hatched, one internally pipped but didn’t make it to external. The three that hatched were - sticky…I don’t know how else to describe it. Two were kind of stuck on the head to their shell once it was open and really had to work to get unstuck. One of their eyes still doesn’t want to open all the way - tried a warm washcloth but it didn’t do much. All appear to be healthy - eating, drinking, running around in their brooder now.

We opened the fourth egg 12 hours after the others hatched and it was already gone. Fully formed, no apparent issues, beak was in the air cell. The membrane was also really sticky on the inside, though.

Is this a potential issue with shipped eggs or did I do something wrong with the incubation? My temp and humidity were consistent - 99.5 forced air, 50% humidity until lockdown and then 70%, although it did get to 72% for a few hours for some reason. I didn’t open the top after lockdown. Appreciate any insight so I can correct for next time.

Hi!

Actually, hatching three out of six shipped eggs is doing very well! Congrats! My last batch of shipped eggs was 2 out of 16. I've hatched probably a dozen batches of shipped eggs and this year has been the worst!

In a couple of days, that sticky stuff will be gone. I don't know why some wind up with that on them but most don't.
