I have welsummers and they are prone to frostbite, even though we seldom get below -20F. Their combs are huge. I can't recommend marans either. I have ameraucanas and they are very winter hardy, but are not my favorite bird with regard to personality.

I think the buckeyes would be a great choice. Even though I've never kept them, I've had them on my short list of breeds to get. The other breed I'm keeping with an ideal comb are wyandottes. They are large, sturdy birds with a rose comb that resists frostbite. I love their temperament and they lay well. Add in that they are drop-dead gorgeous and it makes me very partial to them as a cold weather choice.
