G300....I like that.
I've been referring to mine as the hybrids.
ok, on topic...I have someone laying eggs now, they are pretty small and white with green blotches...now they are more white....
My ducks are 21 weeks old, from Metzer Farms, I have 2 G300, 2 Blue Swedish, one Rouen, and 3 Cayuga females. Males I have 2 Cayuga, 2 Mallards and one that LOOKS like a mallard but no snipped toe and no white necklace, one Rouen making a total of 14.
I think the first eggs are coming from the cayuga but now I am thinking maybe it was the G300. Cayuga eggs are supposed to start out near black. I will try to load some pics with this post. I have been feeding them layer pellets for longer than I thought I should but the feed store suggested it, rather than grower to prevent them from becoming overweight too quickly. Made it easier to feed everyone!
I have read some stories about people successfully getting good homes for males, and so I am trying to convince my daughters that it is a good idea so the girls are not as pursued. I want to get rid of one mallard (two but they are TOTALLY against that) and one cayuga, and I was considering getting rid of the rouen pair as well. I can't eat them, they are pets, but they are not "bonded" to people because they all grew up together. When I am sitting quietly outside they will venture close, and at night I can hold them, pick them up etc as needed but they are not big fans of this activity!
I have a surprise rooster that has to go too. He is a horndog! He was going after the girl chickens and they can hold their own, but when he went after one of the male mallards....they cannot defend themselves against him. He is a handsome boy, 5 months old Australorp with bright red comb and wattles....my DH absolutely hates him cuz he crows. I never wanted a roo but guess who picked him out as a chick? me. The one he picked out is the most mellow, docile black cochin, she doesn't flap when you hold her she just nestles in, and when she bends over she looks like a big fat person bending over, she is just darling! My DH is just as docile and slow moving and when he bends over he reminds me of her....LOL!
