Hello, all.
I don't have any chickens, I'm not even near to owning chickens. I joined so that I can ask questions and hopefully avoid some problems once I get them. It seems that a lot of questions are common to newbies and get posted over and over, but (perhaps like most of them) I think mine will be sufficiently different to warrant asking. Can't plan too far ahead, right?
I live in the U.S. in the upper Midwest, so pretty flat, treeless, dry, and cold, with sort of hot but comparatively temperate summers and spells of extreme cold in winter. Very rural, lots of large-scale farming going on. Chickens should fit in pretty well around here.
My approach is going to be pretty detailed and scientific, to the extent that I'm able: scales, trap nests, record books, etc. Chickens in my eyes are more livestock than pets, and while I may keep a few special ones as pets, and believe wholeheartedly in treating animals with as much kindness as possible, I do intend to eat them.
I hope to be able to contribute meaningfully to this community.
I'm a little nervous about posting too much personal stuff, you know, so I'll leave it at that. I don't mean to be rude or short.
