Thanks, all... I LOOOOOVE this forum... Other than DH, I couldn't think of anyone else who would "get it", beyond an obligatory "Oh, yeah? Lost a kid's chicken, huh? Bummer."

As far as the "friendliness" of this chicken, basically it was hatched out here, handled a LOT and GENTLY, lots of hand feeding and general "desensitization" to humans and various situations. I also chose a breed that does not tend to be skittish or aloof.
Also: take advantage of the first couple days of "imprinting" possibilities; I know people think that it's mainly waterfowl that imprint, but chicks (and most other "ground dwelling" birds) do, too!

Mom2chickensandpups: Silkies are a great choice for "friendliness", lots of gentle interactions & hand feeding & I'm sure you & DD will have lap chickens!!

GretchenHau: If they are older, it may be harder, but plenty of chickens come around with patience, lots of time spent with them, and "positive reinforcement" (i.e. treats etc..).

I just love happy endings! I'm so happy for you and your little girl that you found Flower. I kept reading and hoping it would not turn out bad. Best wishes to you. Now Flower, you must tell mom where you are going next time, or you will be grounded!
