I am sooo excited our big girl laid her first egg!!! My question is why would it smell (and it is pretty bad...almost like a rotten egg smell)? My daughter found it in some mulch and yes, it is warm out, so is that why it smells yucky? Or is it that it is her first egg? Is it what she is eating? I have her on store bought grower and grapes/bird seed for a treat once a day. It is currently in the fridge because we need to save it for all the friends and family to see, but it smells when we take it out. I will go to the grain elevator and buy some layer food on Monday. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

It may not have been freshly laid, but setting in the sun for a few days. If it was found in a mulch pile, who knows when she laid it!

Did it smell when you broke it open? Because from your post, it almost sounds as if it's still in tact. Maybe there was a bit of poo sitting on it. We all know that poo is not the most attractive smelling substance coming from a chicken, especially when it's been sitting in the sun!

Yes, you are right, it might have been sitting out there for the whole day. Since she is only suppose to be 14 weeks (according to the people where I bought her), I didn't think we had to worry too much yet about her laying eggs. My DH built another nesting box tonite and we just installed it temporarily on Tweety's side of the coop because her original nesting box is on the side of the wire divider with our other 5 babies. I put a golf ball in there in hopes that she realizes the right place to put any future surprises!
