I've been using pine shavings so far since they are all indoors, but picked up some of that pelletized bedding once I saw the cost of a 40lb bag. Crossing my fingers that it works for me in the coop, run, or both. You could try mixing horse bedding pellets in it.
Yikes! That's what I am afraid of. I see lots of people swearing by sand, but it seems like most are sweeping out their coop/run or scraping poop boards on a daily basis, heavily dosing something like sweet pdz to help absorb the ammonia.Hi everyone! I switched to sand last fall for my coop due to the cost of shavings being too much. The sand just stinks like ammonia!
As an observer and not a practitioner, my brain just has a really hard time reconciling sand being a good solution if you're only tending to it once a week or less.
Deep litter seems to be the closest approximation to a jungle floor.
I'm contemplating the scientific method: split my coop and run down the middle using multiple different techniques at the same time and see what works best.
