stinky water in our metal waterer

We have a double-walled galvanized metal waterer for the chickens. Over the winter, the water has developed an increasingly, er, foul smell, which I imagine is unpleasant for the girls. I scrub it with dish soap on the inside and out when we refill it -- every 3 days or so. But next time we go back, it's nasty again. Any thoughts on how to improve the situation?

I'd give it a good scrubbing then rinse well with a 10:1 water:bleach solution. Sounds like you've got a bacterial or algal build up inside that's causing the stink.
