This is our first attempt at raising chickens so forgive me if this is silly. DH were just listening to the news and they were talking about the heat and the drought. And, of course, the expected increase in the price of corn. Right now we get our feed at TSC, 50# bag for $13.29 (we pay a little less because my father-in-law is an employee). So would it be wise to stock up now? How long will an unopened bag stay good? Our girls are all mostly laying so they are on layer feed, so there is no need for a feed change any time soon.

Don't keep those cracked feeds long- I would only buy a couple or three months' worth in the summer even if kept relatively cool. If kept hot, only one bag at a time!!!

In the winter I wouldn't get more than 4 months' worth. And that is absolutely pushing it.

Whole grains are a whole different story if kept cool/dry! The cracked commercial food really doesn't last long.
