Stolen Chickens

Has anyone else had any issues with people stealing chickens? We had 5 of our 8 hybrid layers stolen last night from their coop - the whole made in the chicken wire is about 5ft tall, and there was no evidence of the chickens being taken (feathers/blood) etc and the coop had all been left closed with the three remaining chickens in. I have reported this to the police but am at a loss as to how someone managed to steal these from our garden without the chickens making a whole load of noise - even the neighbours didn't hear anything. Any ideas anyone?

- sorry for your loss. It's difficult to understand why a human would have ripped a hole in the wire rather than just opening the run. Am I correct in understanding that the coop door was still closed this morning? If so, it is indeed a mystery.
