When I built my coop I burried the hardware cloth around it and the grass never grew back. It's not generally a problem but it's a little unsightly. It rains and it turns to mud and splashes up on the coop. I was thinking of putting a little white stone border around it. Would that be an issue? The hens don't spend a lot of time there since they free range. They either go in or out. I have sand in the run which seems to be working well. Pretty clean since they don't hang out in the run area. It's just a covered place for their food and water and protection from the elements.

Stones sound like a good choice to me.

Something like gravel would probably work, both to allow drainage and so that if anything tries to dig, it'll attempt to dig through the gravel, hit the wire, and then not go further. If you want to do something more like paving stones you'll want them to be shorter than the skirt itself as pests/predators will likely begin digging at the edge of the stones.
