Stop buying chicken feed

It all sounds incredible, but I was sold at the spring. Having a water source solves so many potential problems.
The spring is the reason I picked this spot. That and the quiet. Neighbors are starting to pop up though, has me considering a move lol I'm too weird and need more personal space 😅 😂 🤣

Darn, and I just had hubby go out and buy 3 acres…
Haha, I have had my home and property for 9 years before I even thought about chickens. The post is geared toward feeding your chickens healthy food and not buying 3 acres. A lot of people do have chickens on 1 or more acres and can try this experiment. I'm sorry if you don't 😔

If it's not a troll, it's likely these are first year pullets that went into molt, finished and resumed laying. Feed would have nothing to do with that, just a combination of genetics, young birds and chickens doing the unexpected just because they can
Not a troll , just a very busy person. I live in southeast Texas and they are not first year pullets and they didn't go through a molt. Never saw any feathers anywhere and my girls like to stay close by me most of the day. I think you should try the experiment before chalking it up to just some kind of coincidence. Thanks

Somehow I think this is a Troll post :old
Not a troll and I simply wanted to know if anyone else had tried this. It's not my business what anyone does or doesn't feed their chickens. I was just looking for some positive feed back . Thanks and have a nice day 😊

If I did, I'd have no birds left in short order due to hawks, owls, cars, dogs plus whatever other predator happens to be around. Not that I have enough quality forage to sustain them, especially in winter anyhow. I'll stick with commercial feed

You asked if anyone ever just free ranged the chickens. We did, almost. I gave the chicks feed until they could manage on their own. Then, fed them whole corn, whole oats, whole wheat, (and sunflower seeds in the winter). They mostly foraged in the summer. We used to have sheep so they could scratch in the manure to look for larvae. In the winter they mostly had the seeds.

Now, with chicks, I don't feed them commercial feed to start. I feed a mix of corn meal, quinoa, chia, a little fennel. When they go outside they also have bugs and vegetation. I add bits of meat when the insects disappear. I don't believe they do as well without meat of some kind (insects or hamburger/pork burger).
