I have 6 hens, 1 RR, 2 PR, and 3 heritage breed. The RR was the first to start laying back in late July and the others eventually followed suit. We have 3 nesting boxes and they all pretty much have broken in all three. Suddenly in the past several weeks, I have been finding the RR’s egg in the coop bedding instead of the nesting boxes. The location where I find her egg makes it seem like she layed it while still roosting because the egg is usually found in the same area of the coop where she likes to roost. I am baffled. Any ideas?

Do you have fake eggs in the nests?
Does the egg on the ground have a good hard shell, and do you find it first thing in the morning?

The hens are all laying and they lat their eggs in the nesting boxes and not always the same one either.
I don’t have fake eggs in the boxes.

My RR was the first to start laying and she was originally getting in a nesting box every time. It’s been in the last week or so that she has left her egg in the bedding of the coop. I find her egg in the coop every morning. It is a complete hard-shelled egg.
