The large producers cut the light and feed to force a molt. Darkness won't hurry a molt along. Feeding a higher protein ration will.Molting? Age? If your chickens are molting, they will get over it quicker if you put them some place dark. I've never tried this, just heard that it works.
How old are your birds? Mine have slowed and some are starting to molt. It's normal for production to fall this time of year.so it’s been warm and humid and my birds aren’t laying well. I have 16 birds and only 5 eggs a day. Advice?
Thanks. Been giving cold treats such as watermelon will try the frozen bottles!I experience this every heat wave. Laying slows when it heats up. :-/ I've found that keeping them cool with extra frozen watermelon, frozen water bottles in their water fonts, Thin non-toxic gel packs wrapped in a zippered case in the nest boxes and chilled feed helps a little.
They are a year to year and a half. The older ones have molted. Younger ones I have not seen signs of molting. ThanksMolting? Age? If your chickens are molting, they will get over it quicker if you put them some place dark. I've never tried this, just heard that it works.
We did have a Coon get in and kill one but we fixed that issue. Thanks!I'm experiencing the same thing! I don't remember summer with such low production. I will say though, as well as being hot I've also had a lot of turnover which can be very disruptive. have you had any events in your flock the summer at all?
