Two days in a row a large dog has visited when I am not home and my dog is penned up. This large dog that I have not personally seen has spent considerable effort trying to get into on of my breeder pens. Evidence is in ground where it has been effectively plowed by dog pacing perimeter of pen and ripping off the rain cover. My neighbor thinks the dog is a bull mastiff but he does not know owner, nor do I. Tomorrow I have parental leave and will post myself out by front window and wait for dog's return. Dogs activity will be documented with camera before I engage it. Options presently on table are SSS, sub lethal shot with firearm (0.22 rifle or 410 bird shot), pain without serious injury shot with pepper spray or BB gun, putting my dog on to interloper and with me helping out with ax handle, capture and transport to human society shelter, or keeping the dog and breaking it in for use as a livestock guarding dog. My county does not have an Animal Control department. If identification is present then owner may be contacted. I spoke with county sheriffs deputy and he said poultry are livestock according to county and state code so killing dog while harassing my livestock is within my rights but that I will be potentially in civil court if owner comes forth to challenge any harm to dog. Officer suggested SSS and pepper spray options although latter will have dog associating me with unpleasantness and not simply the visit. Keeping dog for myself will be expensive because such a critter will have a major feed bill associated with it and possibly vet bills as well. Anybody want a bull mastiff?

Had a similiar problem. I was advised to SSS, but i noticed collars on the dogs. So with out harm to myself i caught dogs and contacted owner. What an A hole.

But if its s bull mastif, i wouldnt try to catch it, even with collar.
If you SSS remember it may have a chip.

Thanks, I did not consider possibilty of a chip.

Some dogs I have caught. One was so common I got the guys number, and would leash the dog till he came. This was BEFORE I had chickens. One time though I called AC first, and I guess he was fined for no licenseDon't see his dog anymore. Now there is another dog that I would SSS if it ever came back, and that is because it bit up my dog.

Be careful if you try to leash the dog. I fenced one in one time, but it climbed my 6 foot fence(!!!!!) before AC came.

I believe the "chip reader" (scanner) needs to be held in close proximity to the animal to find the "chip".

And if the dog would be covered by several feet of dirt...I wouldn't be concerned about a possibility of a "chip".

Sounds like some are afraid of dogs. Just because it's a Bull Mastiff does not mean it's a man killer. I would personally confront to dog on my terms and find out about him. That would be with my .45 with me, just in case he might not be that friendly. But him being alone tells me he has a home to go to. He may be a woos and just be bored. Then you can find out the owner, from a collar, and it not call the AC. Then if that's not an option then you're running out of options. A Bull Mastiff is a fine dog and I would have to have to shoot one, but then you gotta do what you gotta do.

Dog in question is thought to be a less than fully grown. I am not certain of it being a mastiff either. Based on vague description it could even be an Anitolian. Dog reported to be very large (>100 pounds) with dark face. No description on coat or body type other than size. It does have very large feet based on prints. If it comes in I will post picture.
