Stopping Mean Roosters

My Little Sister's Farm :

I don't believe in rehab, I have too may nieces and nephews that love to be in with the chickens. If I can't trust him, he's gone. But for you I would try dropping feed every time you walk near him. He will associate treats (cheerios, scrambled egg yolks and cooked rice seem to be a favorite with my chickens) with you. You could catch him and cage him and make him dependent on you. This will piss him off at first but after a week or two he will be okay with you when you open the pen to add feed. Other than getting rid of him this is the only thing I can think of.

So you know your not alone, I know more people with mean bantam roosters than full sized roosters, it's the Napoleon syndrome of little men, err, I mean little chickens.

Good luck!!!

Same here about rehab...it just became too much trying to remember to have something handy to smack my silkie roo with. Some people out of guilt just put up with it. Just get rid of him, take the loss. Looking after your hens will become so stressful you won't want to do it.

You should check out gritsar 's page. They have a cool thing on rooster reform.

But it's not only my love for this roo, he was sexed to be female (ripoffffff!!!) and came from mypetchicken.com this mean lil roo cost me 10 bucks!!!! as a goddam chick!!! Also, when I go into the coop, I block him out with a water bottle cardboard holder (the little carboard box part on the bottom that holds them together) and I block the "doggy door" to the run. Sometimes when I go feed the hens, I swat at him and let him know I want the hens to eat first. He glares at me but takes it, but I can tell he would attack me if I gave him the chance (when I feed him, i stand behind the door...)
