Store Bought chicken Meat vs. Backyard Chicken Meat?

Hi everyone and thanks for all the good info. We started with chickens last year just 5 as we were new at this, 18 more this year and they all free range, Our new c
chickens came with surprise 4 roosters, a neighbor just butchered 3 of them for us yesterday (we gave him one and a couple doz eggs) I was wondering why the meat was so much darker than store bought. The roosters were 4-5 months old. I put them in the freezer is this OK? should I take them out and cook them right away? Next year we will get some of the rocks for meat, we also added three pigs and two cows this year...how much fun I'm having I almost feel bad eating them :( but this was a decision to raise and grow as much of our own food as possible.
