Agway sold me this chick as a Rhode Island Red. I'm new to chickens but I know this baby isn't turning red! Can anyone tell me what type of chicken this might be? She and her sister are a bit bigger and a little more aggressive than the other breeds as well.

I am a newbie but I can tell that isn't a RIR.

My guess would be Jersey Giant. We have 2 and they look very much like your little one.

I looked up the Barred Rock chicks and I think that's about right too! I'm not sure how they could get it this wrong! I hear they're good layers too so I think they'll keep them. Thanks a bunch everyone!

What color are their legs? If their legs are yellow, they are barred rocks. If their legs are pink/white then they are Marans.

The chick in your photo is also male.

Ya, looks like a Barred Rock. I've had issues that early seeing a color difference on their feet, and it does appear to be a male, but don't get rid of it yet. Depends on the source, because some of my hatchery BRs don't have really yellow legs, and I have two hens that had that same coloring when they were younger. I could have sworn they were males. In general though, yellow legs signify BR and the lighter coloring usually means male. And as far as being more aggresive: There is a noticeable difference with BRs, but they're just extra curious and friendly. They're the one breed in my coops that definately have personality. In my opinion, I think it's a good thing you got BRs instead of RIRs. My BRs are so entertaining and friendly, and well, my RIR tasted yummy.

lol AGWAY.....Their employees (which consists of 16 yr olds) tried telling me all their layers mash was medicated......lol ...I had to break the news to them that they were wrong and showed 4 of them how to read the labels on their feed bag and what it actually meant, and what was good about protein and calcium (it seems elementary but they had no idea) by the time i was done with my speech I had about 5 employees gathered around thanking me (ages ranged between 16-20's) lol I was laughing with them and friendly about it, I noticed their manager looking on from the distance, as a few customers thanks thanked me, and oh yeah , They had chicks their and the spelling on their Buff Orpington was Spelled "Orfintin" ha ha poor guys lol
