You know that California has recently passed legislation forbidding cruelty to chickens who "work" for the egg business. (see article--sorry that this article hits 2 topics, this business occurred last Fall)

Some folks think that this will cause the price of eggs to rise. How do you think this will affect us?

Sorry but that article had NOTHING to do with chickens it was all about "Right to Life"

Fine--chuck the article--Ca DID pass legislation forbidding the **this is a real gasp** practice of nailing chickens to their cages and keeping them in way too tight quarters. I agree that no one should do these things. My old farmer hayman (before my 1999 move) used to humanely raise kosher chicks, from hatchlings to 6 weeks old in an airy building with a mass feeder and mass waterer. I kept my horse trailer stored in an adjoining building, so I got to see the chickies numerous times. I guess some egg people in CA couldn't see fit to keep them like this, so they passed a law forbidding bad practice.
C - I tried not to put everyone to sleep by explaining this.....

DO YOU THINK egg prices will go up because of this?
IF SO...how do you think it will affect US?

It's true, unfortunately. People do a lot of cruel things to animals and each other, when they can--I couldn't look at myself in the mirror, if I did something like that. Ridiculous, when you consider that the farmer I talked about had several hundred birds in one open-air building. They didn't look too crowded or crushed--they were LOUD. There's a recent post on the current poll, where a BYCer talks about knowing that the bird they slaughter has been treated well and had a good life. That's probably why some of us don't name our birds. I'm not naming any of my hens until we take the Roos for dinner.

So...are eggs going up or not? Let me know your thoughts.

Probably not here unless we see a short rise in winter months. This is farm country. Half the people have their own chickens. I've said before free range eggs are about $1.25/dozen here and it's the reason it's hardly worth selling mine. The stores aren't going to have much luck raising prices much. I'm sure we also have our own chicken farms about somewhere even if they aren't as noticeable as other livestock production. I do know of quite a few turkey farms and if the weather is warm so they have the doors open you can see the 100s of turkeys loose in the big buildings.

These have been going around for the past few years. There are already hen houses that are cage free. But they are no better than the cage chickens as they are in one big building all standing in the own mess. Fact of the matter is cage birds are easier to keep clean and healthy and collect eggs from when doing hundreds of chickens. Most places are just making cages a bit bigger which is fine. These chickens usually never live past a year anyways since that is their peak laying time.

One bill in one state will not raise prices across the country.

I've seen that eggs were about $ .88 for a dozen large eggs and are now at $1.25.

The farmer you are refering to was probally raising meat birds and not layers. That is was why they were in an airy open building. You slaughter at 6 weeks.

I cant imagine why they would have to nail a chicken to their cages. They are already caged in a probally 14"x14" (or smaller) cage where are they going. Are you just pulling our legs?
