Stores Caught Dumping Items That Could Be Given To Charity.

This makes me so angry. My boyfriend worked at Metro (canadian grocery, they took over Loeb) and the bakery was ordered to throw out so much food. They couldnt bring it home or arrange for a charity to come get the food. Sure, it was past its best before date but we all know food stretches beyond those dates. The hungry don't care if something is a tad bit stale.

It's just disgusting how horrible corporations are. If we all started writing letters and boycotting stores that do this, they would quickly change their tune. Seriously, all it takes is getting your money source (customers) angry to change something. We have a LOT more control than we think we do!! Write to Walmart and any store that does this and say you will no longer shop there until things change.

When I worked at a local mall I had a very eye opening experience. My first Wednesday night there, close to closing I saw a lot of people who worked in the mall headed for the South end of the mall, that is where the big dumpsters are. I asked someone finally if there was a meeting or something I should know about and he looked at me and said "Girl, you MUST be new! It's dumpster diving night!!". Every Wed night the Dillards stores would take their clothing, makeup, shoes, anything,, and to the dumpster it went. They didn't shred or tear it up, just bagged and dropped it. Everyone would wait until management left and then it looked like a bunch of rats in a garbage pail! The guys would jump in and toss the bags back out. Everyone would rip them open and practically have a fashion show in the parking lot. One of my favorite formals came from a dumpster diving expedition and trust me, I earned my snorkel! I scored a 750 dollar dress that was marked down to 300 and no one bought, it fit me perfectly and I dreamed about that dress. I found it in the dumpster! Toys R Us and Kay Bee toys did the same thing. Toys that didn't sell at Christmas weren't returned, they were dumped.

In today's world I'm sure someone would be sued if somebody ate a donated food item and got sick, so I understand them not wanting to donate. Also, if a company has paid to purchase merchandise and it's damaged or outdated, I guess it's their right to throw it in the dumpster if they want to. Everybody is too busy tryng to save the world instead of themselves or trying to get something for nothing these days. I understand there are people doing without, I live in one of the poorest states in the nation, but everybody can't get upset over a decision someone else has made and can do nothing about.

I used to work for a leather goods store that sold all kinds of stuff and all the seasonal stuff was donated. I understand food not being donated because of the legal aspect. But stuffed animals with Christmas hats on and bunnies at Easter, etc., were always donated to the Red Cross.

I don't thin all the stores throw there food out. I get bread/baked goods from a lady a few streets over occasionally and she gets loads given to her usually a day before the due date, that's what freezers are good for:)

I used to work at a certain chain that sells Cinnamon Rolls. The old rolls were put into those 6 packs to sell the next day. If they didn't sell they were thrown in the dumpster. Sometimes, at the end of the day, people would stop and ask if they could have the old ones. We were supposed to say that we donated them to charity.

I sometimes brought boxes home, and my mom would give them to the local fire stations.

I know it isn't the same as wasting nutritious food or clothing, but it is still wasteful and stupid.

Yeah that. They're not even allowed to give food away "for animals" just in case someone might eat it and sue. I just hate waste, but it's a sue-happy world that we live in.

At my pizza place I know that the managers threw out 15 pizzas instead of donating them because they didn't want the shelter people coming around constantly begging for more. I can kinda see where she was coming from on that angle too. If you donate to one place word gets around and suddenly everyone's got their hand out.

It's EXTREMELY rare that we have enough toss-out pizza to justify a trip to the shelter to donate it. Most of the time she lets us employees eat it for lunch or whatever because it's just like one or two pies a day.

A bunch of my in-laws work for the evil empire (walmart). FIL brings home LOTS of non-food-stuff from the dumpster

he's a junk collector
They really can't do anything about dumpster diving unless the dumpster is enclosed in a fence - then it becomes tresspassing.

Just gonna put this out there:

Whatever happens after we put the items through claims to the home office...is their business. Do not blame individual stores...we must follow policy or risk being shut down. Contact the home office if you want some justice.

I get a box of "old" produce once a week for chicken feed from a high end grocery store chain which will remain unnamed. ( It's a local chain, not Whole foods.)

The stuff they throw away is better than what they Sell at most grocery stores!!

Some of the best stuff doesn't go to the chickens if you know what I mean!
