I recently came across a chance to pick up more spent grain then I could ever use( I only have small flock of quail) is there a practical way to preserve spent grain other then drying. freezing could work but I have read that the grain will only last hours after being thawed anyone who feeds spent grain what are your experiences?

I would only take what you can use. It goes bad really fast.
I would do that but seeing as a have a small amount of small birds it wouldn’t really be practical to take as much as I could use right away(probably like 2 cups) I might try freezing it and just see how it goes

Unfortunately I don’t have a food saver but the grains are available every week so I am thinking they would not be frozen long enough to damage any nutrients.

I was part of a massive research program to develop a way to preserve wet distillers grains and other wet corn co-products. We could only get a few extra days of storage with a mixture of organic acids and other preservatives.

Unless you can freeze or vacuum package to exclude all oxygen you will have spoilage in just a few days during the summer.
