My buff o all of a sudden began acting very strange. She doesn't leave the coop and when I force her too she will sit on the ground for long periods of time with her feathers ruffled and wings slightly extended. She has stopped laying and is more aggressive with the other birds now. She was the runt and this is not like her to chase other birds and my scottie away LOL. She does not have an egg stuck in her "binding" I guess you call it- I checked her for that. But she does have some bright yellow almost orange colored poo mixed in with her regular poo. I don't see amy worms in her poo and the other birds are acting normal. She is eating less but drinking just fine. HELP!! What is wrong with her? The only thing I have done differently is I bought them some worms before I left from the feed store. What could be the matter with her?

I think what you have there is a broody chicken...they make terrible growling noises, will bite, and act viscious. They won't eat or drink unless you drag them off the nest, poop big nasty poops and go trundling back to the nest. If you pick them up and sit them down somewhere else, they look like feathered hovercrafts :) No cause for alarm..she will be fine. Got any eggs to give her????

I AGREE SOUNDS LIKE SOMEONE WANTS TO BE A MOMMY...

I just read up on it and it totally makes sense. I went on vacation and asked a friend of mine to tend to my flock while I was away. I was worried that my "helper" would not see the importance of daily egg collection. Upon my return my hen was acting strange so now I suspect that she did not collect the eggs daily. She probably allowed them to accumulate and collected them all just prior to my return (such a slacker LOL). Uggh...now I have to break the broody habit! Wish me luck!!

Thanks a bunch for the help I really appreciate it!!

FUNNY, you should talk about collecting, my Maran chicken decided she was going to go broody for the second time already this year, her and her other helpers, were all laying eggs in one spot for the Maran to sit on. SHE COLLECTED 38 EGGS. Yes, this desparate chicken had 38 eggs underneath her and she tried her hardest to hatch them all. Needless to say only 4 survived, why well two of the other helpers were bantams, Seeing how the Maran is a much larger chicken, when she sat on the bantam eggs, they broke underneath her. Of course, once they break chances of hatching are slim to none. Lucky I was able to save her 4 eggs that did not get any yolk on them and she was a happy camper to be able to hatch those babies out. I am considering getting her conseling because 38 EGGS, you have to be CRAZY to try and hatch that many... LOL...

Chickens who desparately want to be a mommy don't need eggs! They will set on absolutely nothing. I have a little OEGB mix that wants to be a mommy so badly!!! I put her out of the coop all day long...at night, she comes in, sits on her empty nest and dares anyone to come near!!!

Good luck breaking her up...my little momma doesn't want to hear anything about not being a momma! Now I have a broody bantam cochin, too!!!
