I have 4.5 month old leghorns and recently discovered that one of them is developing a strange bump on her nose. At first is almost looked like there was a piece of beak that was hooking up a little, near the nostrils but now it is developing some sort of black bump underneath. I am almost wondering if it is dirt, etc collecting under the hook that was forming but didn't want to mess with it too much until I posted to see if any of you knew what it might be. She is not showing any signs of illness or problems at all. What could it be (it doesn't really look like some of the tumor photos I've seen in other posts)? It really does look the upper part is actually part of the beak. Any useful info would be appreciated.

I tried to take some pics but she was not thrilled with the idea of me trying to get some closeups so they are a little blurry.

Thanks for the help!

Difficult to say, my first two thoughts would be a sore from wire/water pans or something else she banged her beak on; but the one I am really leaning towards with the season is possibly a very mild case of pox; some times birds will only get one or two bumps and then those scab over (the black part) and they disappear. It doesn't have to be manifested in all of the flock either; just one. Not a terribly contagious disease really, easiest thing to do is just let it run its course.

If it is pox you can use black shoe polish, iodine, toothpaste, or sharpies/magic markers to aide the drying process. Check the birds legs for red splotches/sores and possibly the vent as well if you worry of pox; sometimes symptoms appear there.

God bless,
Daniel.

It may be a fowl pox presentation. I would suspect a hard peck from another chicken and it could be a scab. I would simply keep an eye on it. I have no doubt it will go away no problems.
