Chickens have been laying eggs about three weeks now, switched their food over two and a half weeks ago. Today had one soft shell egg and then one hen walked right in front of us, no sounds , and just laid an egg and walked off. This egg seems to have a huge yoke but no shell. What's going?

I've never experienced the huge yolk type egg but we had plenty of soft shells when the girls fist started laying. sometimes their systems are not fullly functional and they just have "woopsi" eggs. Just make sure they are getting enough calcium in their diet. If I take my girls off layer feed for too long they have issues still. What works for me is I go through one bag of layer pellets then a bag of flight developer (which is higher in protein and lower in calcium than the layer) and then back tolayer. I also leave out oyster grit free choice and I bake any egg shells (from the eggs we eat) crush them and skatter them as a treat. You just have to find your own system. I would not worry too much. they are still young. Good luck.

Thank you so much. That helps, and now I won't worry... As much :-)
Thanks again

No problem. i stalked BYC for a year before I got a profile.. There is alot of great info. on here but some junk. You just have to use common sense. I usually do a search if I have a question or problem and it has probably already been answered by someone.

Enjoy your fluffies!
