The shell was very soft (they get grit all the time) and the inside looked like this, any ideas...




 
There's an excellent article that addresses egg abnormalities and I believe what you are seeing is not uncommon (I've had a couple like that with our girls too). We found it was with the 1st egg or 2 of a pullet just beginning to lay. The article covers all the reasons, check it out:

Are they new layers? You might see alot of funky eggs in the first month or so of laying, usually nothing to worry about.

BTW grit is usually granite used in the gizzard for aid in digestion of fibrous foods like grass and other plant materials.
Oyster shells are for adding calcium to the diet of laying chickens to help form good shells.

Yeah they are new enough layer, and yeh i knew that about the grit, its great what you write after a night shift, ;-) they get plenty of oyster shell too ;-D
