Our 18 week old pullets have begun to lay. They were 18 weeks on Tues/Wed. To me, it's exciting for the first eggs of each group. Also to watch the behavior of them as they get close to laying And the acceptance of the hens, when they do.

The 2 on the left were the very first on Wed. One half soft shell and the other looks like it didn't get all the white inside before the shell. The bottom picture is the inside of the egg that had part of it protruding.

The 2 on the right were from yesterday and today. Both small but normal solid shells.

Now the guessing game on who laid. I know one who laid on Wed, just not sure which egg. I may put a cam inside the coop. Pleased they have begun and waiting for glitches to be worked out.

Can you remind me of your breeds?

1 Sapphire Gem - I think she is one who laid.
2 C Queens
1 BSL
1 BR
All the same age.
So all brown egg layers then? Have fun!

For what it’s worth, I can tell our BR’s eggs from the BO’s. BR: smooth shell, tan (meaning brown with some gold) egg; BO: slightly matte/ textured feel to the shell, light brown with a little pink in it.

But that’s only useful for comparing, not as a guide to BR eggs!

That pink egg above is a beautiful color, whoever laid it!

Thanks. I'm waiting to make sure the top left one, doesn't have an issue. I've never seen one like it.

Our 2 yr SG hen lays green eggs!

Only the top left is a brown brown. Our other BR and BSL have a lighter color.
