That doesn't sound good, with out it's parents it had 0 chance of survival, but it seems that's the way of nature. I don't like it, It would be nice if it did show up. Even doing what you did was awfully nice.Just an update. Friday night the gosling was in our 36" kiddie pool, hanging with the 5 ducks, no sign of any other goose around anywhere, even the pond. I made sure it got some duck-erade and some feed and went on my way. Saturday morning there was no sign of the gosling, but the parents and 2 siblings were around. We searched the property, as much of the pond front as we could (about 70% of it belongs to neighbors we don't know) but no sign of it anywhere. Same thing Sunday. We're hoping he is over at another nearby pond (which we don't have access to). Haven't seen any geese this morning, the only fowl in the area appears to be the pond ducks and my ducks. I've spotted 3 cats that look pretty rough, I doubt they are pets. 3-4 houses down from the pond I saw about 5 kittens roaming the street, not a pleasant area for any young fowl it seems.
We debated the antibiotics thing Friday night, but were tied up most of the day Saturday to try anything. We're hopeful the little guy is still around somewhere, we were amazed he made as long as he did even before we started playing a part. We're disappointed and regretful that we didn't temporarily pen it up, despite the Canadian geese laws. I think that would be the only way to compete with the amount of feral cats around here.
Geese shake their heads.I was just looking through the forums and I saw my name, about the shaking head thing, when I went to the vet to have Apple put down, he said that the shaking head was a sign that the gosling was going to die, it was the point where they don't really know what is going on and their bodies are just trying to focus on fixing the problem. It seems you were smart and got the little guy electrolytes and vitamins in time and it helped him get out of that state. I can't drive so my little goose was doomed.
We can't find any female geese his age. And it's not a typical head shake, it's more like a sway. I will post a video of what my geese were doing to see if it was what your abandoned gosling was doing. It's definitely not the normal head shake.
Poor baby. that´s sad. Dying gosling.
Well at 6 weeks, you could get an older goose as company. Or, of course, get a couple of tiny females, bring them along, and let them out with him to eat grass while you keep an eye out, because sometimes goslings can be bullies. But not always. And he may be a bit on the small side, eh?6 weeks.
