It is day 22 and just the one chick (on the 20th day). Lucy is still sitting on 9 eggs. One is moving and another is peeping quietly. I'm may let her sit for two or three more days if she doesn't give up sooner.
I understand that different breeds may hatch later than others?
The one that hatched is an ameraucana and very active. There are two more ameraucana eggs, one marans, two langshan/favorelle mix, and the remaining 4 are orpington. She started with 12 eggs. One burst and she ate another the first week. I didn't candle.
I'm wondering if they haven't hatched because I got her off the nest for a few minutes on her 19th day?
I'm in Texas and the temp has been 88 to 92 every day & humidity reasonable (for us) at around 50 to 60%. Today it rained hard and temp is somewhat lower but humidity is high .
I don't want lucy's health compromised. How long should I reasonably let her sit? She is very good with the lone chick. She is sitting on eggs but can reach water and feed. She keeps her chick close. The kennel is very large & closed off from the other hens. She did soil the nest today but it wasn't too hard to clean up and didn't get on chick or eggs.
Should I just let her decide when to stop sitting?
