Strange honking/crowing sound from Buff Orp Pullet

My BO's don't honk, but one of my EEs did one day when it got really hot. It seemed to be entirely associated with extreme panting. All my birds pant when it's 100+, which is most days of the summer here but thankfully no further episodes of honking. It was unsettling to say the least.

I heard a honk while in the chicken yard today-6 of my 25 are buff orps. I immediately assumed it was one of them since I had read part of this thread earlier! Can't be sure though cause I didn't see who made the sound!

She's a pullet.

I haven't heard my birds honk (except the geese

) but our heatwaves are dry and we get into the 90s, usually.

Although three summers ago, we hit 107F, which is beyond unusual. That was awful. I didn't have birds then.

HI. My Buff Orp. sounds like she is honking also.Maybe thats why my ee roo, pecks at her alot.its hot here but none of my chickens are panting.Perhaps someone that raises just BOs has the answer.Maybe my roo. thinks shes a roo.too.Glad to hear that its not only mine.

I'm having the same issue with my Buff. I live in the city and I'm terrified of her actually being a rooster. Any updates on this? You're sure she's a gal? Ours are about 3.5 months old, so I don't have any eggs to go by. I really love her so I don't want to give her away to a farm unless I absolutely need to. oye.

I really think it is just a buff orp thing. Their egg laying has decreased as it is so hot here, but still no crowing. Since they are six months old, I would definitely say she is a hen, especially comparing her to some roosters her age. She has no roo traits. She doesn't try to mount any of the other girls, doesn't crow; or any of that stuff. It is weird, but I guess she is just a special girl!

My Buffy honks also, despite whatever the current temperature is. She's 19 weeks now and is actually doing it less than when she was, say, around 15 weeks or so. It was quite alarming when she began, but then I found others on here that have had the same experience. Thank goodness for the normalizing that checking in with a group can provide!
