Hello!

I live in an agricultural community, in far northern California. I have not been here long enough to know many people. One day I mentioned to my land lady that I would like to find some hatching eggs, for my incubator. She said she could do even better. She offered to bring me chicks. I gleefully accepted.

Months went by, with no further mention of the subject. Finally, I posted on our local CL, that I was looking for hatching eggs. My landlady saw the post, and chided me for it. Hadn't she said she would bring me chicks???

More months slid away. Then, in the deepest part of winter, I was told to come pick up the Chickens (Chickens? What happened to chicks?) at my landlady's house. They would be waiting in the driveway. (??!!??)

As advertised, we arrived to find four pullets shivering in a wire cage, in the snow. They were, and are, some very odd looking Chickens!

They are nervous, and not at all friendly.
They have long legs, short, sleek plumage, and surprisingly heavy, muscular little bodies.
Their faces have very few feathers. Their tales are very stiff.
They are just awful to one another! Mean, and very food-aggressive.
They are smallish, but not bantam sized. If they had fluffier feathers, they might not seem small at all.
It is their long legs that really stand out, to me.

When they arrived, none were laying yet. Since then, all four began to lay. They lay a medium sized, cream to buff colored egg. They seem to lay every day.

In the last month, one has gone broody. Another has become transgender. Though she used to lay eggs every day, now she does not. Instead, she tries very hard to crow, and mount the other hens. She also postures at me sometimes. They are about ten months old at this point.

Naturally, I have asked about their breed and former circumstances. Two came with bands on their legs! Their breed, I am told, is "Brown." The leg bands, I was given to understand, are there because they are show birds. That's it. No matter how I phrase my questions, no further info is forthcoming.

As I say, they are Great layers, and seem to be smart, healthy birds! Certainly they are entertaining! I know their gender, even if they do not. But, what breed of bird can they possibly be? Any notion?

Thank you so very much!

Here are some more pics. I had the idea that game birds were smaller. No?

Well, thank you very much! I haven't known anyone who kept game birds (of the chicken sort) before. I am amazed, because people always seem to be looking for good layers. If their pattern thus far is an indication, these birds are amazing layers! They are not friendly, as I say, but that could just be because no one messed with them when they were little. I guess they could be crosses with other chicken breeds? I kept them indoors after they came, because they just don't seem to have the plumage for winter weather. But, crosses with a cold hearty breed, I wonder how they would do. My, my, my. I have a lot of research to do! Thank you so much for the ID!
