I have a SLW that makes the WORST sound when she is getting ready to lay. She makes this awful loud low pitch screeching sound. It sounds like a mix between eagle and dinosaur. Ok I know, strange. After she lays she does the normal egg song. Is this just her sounds or could something be wrong?

My chickens make all kind of awful sounds when laying. Sometimes you would think one them is getting slaughtered in there the way it sounds!!!! Perfectly normal as long as she lays the egg!

Egg-laying can't be entirely pleasant!

I only have one who does an egg song, and it's about an hour *before* she lays the egg. One of the others paces frantically and goes in and out of the nesting box for 40 minutes or so before she lays. And then another almost lays at any given time in mid-stride out in the yard.

Silly girls!

Well, I think it's pretty understandable. Try passing something the size of a small watermelon (to keep the proportions relatively the same) out of the human body, and see what kind of noises would come out of the human mouth.

I think it's perfectly normal. My hens do the same, especially if we disturb them while they're on the nest.

I have a Dutch Bantam that also does this but she sings an egg song too. Often both before and after the egg is layed she will screech then sing and alternate for awhile. I think it drives her rooster nutty cause now he helps her sing! He sounds like a hen that layed an egg. It is hilarious!
