Strange object from pullets bum - pictures **Final UPDATE post #37**

That's it that's it!!! Chris you did it!! The thing she passed does look very much like the egg in a bag as shown on the site although my hens was a lot more irregular. But the very last picture on that site shows a funny hole shape on the egg, JUST like the holes on the two items my hen passed.

What I am confused about now is what is the actual bag? Is that something that happens everytime an egg is made inside the chicken or only in these cases? So it's not part of the internal structure of the chicken then (which is what I glean from reading)

I'm going now to disect those two larger structures and see what inside.

Scroll down the page titled 'weird eggs' until you get to this post:

Annette found a weird egg in May 2003. Louise the Horrible laid it and we all feared for Louise's health. A few weeks later, Louise laid a normal egg.

The pic right there looks EXACTLY like what you found, and this lady's hen was all right....hope this helps! The crop problem may be the cause, not effect....

I just thought of something. You know how the egg yolk gets 'twisted' into the sac that separates it from the egg white? You know, when you crack an egg and you can see how the yolk is inside a little bag and the ends of the bag are twisted off by the hen's insides? What if the little stringy thing coming off the end of the egg in the pics has something to do with that, except instead of getting twisted off and enclosed in the shell it ends up outside the shell with a whole in the shell???

Sorry, I'm just trying to help....LOL!

I think you may be on to something here..... Pip I would not give up on her just yet. Maybe start some electrolytes and antibotics and see what happens.....Goodluck!

This is what I removed from the oviduct of one of my hens. Two others had the same thing happen, laying internally. Just putting this picture here for comparison. It was like a sausage in a casing, actually.

You know I think you might be onto something there!!! I have just taken some more pics of the dissection I just did, and I really think you might be right. I'll upload the new pics as soon as Photobucket has done it

Both of them have obvious egg white inside, and you can see the white lining that normally occurs between the white and the shell. As I cut the egg open it felt gritty just like very fine egg shell.

I just wanted to add that the chickens are free range, and they are fed a 1/2 and 1/2 mix of layer pellets and wheat. They also have very low bird bath type thing that has oyster grit in all the time for them to peck at.

I have 10 chickens and up until Sunday we were getting 8 eggs a day, then Monday we got 10 so I knew all had layed. Up until then I have suspected she hasn't been laying but can't be certain.

Now I'm off to try and sort out her crop problem

Glad it got figured out! Will she eat anything at all, other than the grass???

The other question is to find out why she's laying eggs like this. Is she going through menopause? Internal layer?? Something's not right....
