STRANGE or FUNNY NAMES

Quote:
That is awsome, and to have a picture, way cool!! We had a lot of Ceasar's. Course, in my family, the nicknames were the killers. Being Sicilian, we get a lot of grief, but surprisingly, there are a lot of Michaels too!

Interesting; some of the names mentioned as funny, odd or strange do not sound so to me, and some not even that unusual.

From DH's side of the family, he great grandmother gave birth to eleven children. Except for two of them, they all shared a name (first or middle) with at least one of their siblings. The first two boys were Frederick Carl & Carl Frederick. Four of the boys had William in their name, There was a Henry & a Henrietta; they weren't the only girl & boy shared names, but I don't recall the others offhand. No twins to explain any of the repetition.

On my side there were Uncles named Ozro (nicknamed Bote), Leeman, Irvin, Watterson, Alfred, Oscar, Irving, Powell, Newton, San Francisco, Baylis, Bowlan, Dow, Amos, Loranzi Napoleon, Whitmore, Carroll, Sherwood, Joab. Aunts (pronounced Aint) Lucretia, Olive, Elvira, Balzoa & Balzora, Ensley, Luccie (not sure of pronunciation--several generations back--so it might have been an odd spelling of Lucy), Jamina & Jemima, Roena, Thoene, Cincinatti, Pearl, Elmer (pronounced as Almer), Ora. Lots of use of family names follow down the generations as middle & first names.

I gave several generations worth of what I find as odd names; left out the reasonably normal names. Do realize that up until the last 2-3 generations birth control was not available or practiced, that many children died young, and much of the population were family farmers, needing all the help they could get. Most families were fairly large. It really wasn't until post WWII that typical family size was reduced to an average of 2-3 kids. Not that all families are small, but as a whole, large families (except within certain populations such as Catholic or Morman) are much less common now than they were in years past.

My grandmother's name is Idell...her sisters' names were: Illa, Iva & Iny--all promounced with a long I. Cant remember her brother's given name, but they called him "Buck."

I went to school with a girl named Pat Tooey. Ya gotta wonder what her parents were thinking!

In DH's family one guy's name was Bert. He apparently liked it so much that all of his kids had Bert as part of their names: Wilbert, Robert, Herbert, and Bert Jr.

On the other side was a guy named Lott. He also must have loved his name because he did the same thing! He named his daughter Charlott (no E) his son Lott Jr and another son Willott.
