Could this be a first egg? Reproductive illness? Just heavy bloom? My
I found this egg in my nesting box today. It's fairly large. My girl who lays the biggest egg in my flock, an Orpington, is my suspect, but her eggs have always have a medium to heavy bloom, not an incredibly thick layer like this. And this egg is slightly bigger than her eggs. The coloring under the white stuff looks darker than hers. I have a few 28 week old pullets that are starting to lay, but this egg is bigger than any other single yolk egg I've ever gotten. I don't know if I should crack it open yet. Anyone seen something like this before?

my egg haul today: the olive egg is from one of the 28 week olds. The other 3 pullets are brown eggers that I don't know are laying or not. But I know for sure which hen layed every egg except the strange egg in this photo.

It's a very heavy bloom is all, perfectly fine, & adds extra protection, beauty to an egg. I got one this morning that's a powder pink.

That’s just a heavy bloom. You can get it wet to see its true color and maybe figure out who laid it unless it’s from a new girl.

It seems to me that after some of my girls take a couple days break from laying their next egg is more heavily pigmented and/or comes with a heavy bloom. I haven’t been taking many photos of my eggs with heavy blooms so here’s the couple I could find deep in my photo collection.
The first one next to the green egg is from a newer layer.

This middle one was also from a new layer and now that particular lady lays heavy bloomed eggs on the regular. Sometimes they look really chalky like yours! They are actually a shade of brown between the two on either side, often with speckles.

Yes I do! Ive always wanted a rainbow basket so my first batches of chicks all are blue/pink/terracotta layers. The batch after that in June (new laying pullets mentioned above) now are giving me olive, another terracotta I believe, and this purple looking dark brown egg that is also absolutely massive. I didn't expect such a gorgeous egg out of seemingly only production brown egg breeds but here we are and I'm loving it!

Do you have Marans or Welsummer hens? Those are pretty dark eggs, and the bloom is gorgeous!

One of my Marans pullets gave me these last year: 1st pic -Purple Ombré
2nd pic- same eggs wet
I hope she gives me purple eggs again this year.
