Well, here's an update to my poo post. I finally got tired of waiting for my vet to call me back. I have a feeling that the tech that I spoke with never relayed the message to him. Anyway, we had a little chat, me providing the condition of the hen, symptoms etc. He did a little google-ing himself and agreed that penicillin would seem to be the best treatment for the diagnosis of EYP. We went to the local Tractor Supply and got some. So we have been giving her 1/2 cc of penicillin in the breast muscle since Wednesday night once daily. Sunday will be her last dose. 5 days of treatment. I can tell you that she seems a little bit better. She is talking now, which she wasn't before. I also witnessed her eating a little and drinking a little. I have seen regular poo (we have quarantined her in our deceased dogs primo log cabin dog house that my husband built,, it has an attached chain link kennel). She was pacing the kennel yesterday when I let the other hens outside to forage for snacks. She also was trying her best last night to get away from us to avoid being held on her back and poked with a needle. Which she didn't seem to have the energy to do before. Those are the good signs. Unfortunately the bad sign is that she still continues to pass the old cooked egg stuff. Not in large quantities. So I'm worried that she is retaining those eggs? All I can say now is that we will do all that we can to make her better but if things get worse and we have no alternative it will be euthanasia for her. She is sweet, it will be a shame. I have to say that out of all of our hens, the Rhode Island reds have the most personality, along with one of our Buff Orpingtons which is a HUGE chicken. She lays jumbo eggs! I hope reproductive issues aren't in her future as those eggs sometimes have 3 yolks! Most of the time there are 2!
Thank you again to all of the kind/wonderful people who have taken the time to reply to my posts. Your expertise has been invaluable!
Okay, yesterday was the last day of treatment for EYP for my hen. She seems much better. She is eating, drinking, pacing the fence because she wants to get out to be with her friends. but she continues to poop this white clotted looking mess that keeps getting all matted on her butt. I don't see much regular poo in the pen. Actually, I'm not sure at all that it is poop, it may be egg. I don't know where to go from here. Do I just wait to see if she goes downhill again? Do I treat her with another antibiotic? Could it be caused by something else altogether?
I can tell you that she has not laid any eggs since she has been isolated, and that has been over a week.
HELP! I'm not sure what to do next...
