Strange Rooster Behavior. Is this normal??

Awh come on Mary. Doesn’t everyone have to carry a rake or a shovel every time they go outside? Doesn’t everyone walk around with the fear of attack. Geez I don’t know let’s say...I have a young pup that snarls at me and when I go to pet him he bites should I let my toddler around him? Oh wait he doesn’t like my flip flops so I’ll change my shoes that’ll fix it......:idunnosometimes people just got to figure it out on their own. It’s the children I worrie about. Amen

With my very little experience as a noobie: I thought the same thing about the shoes. My girls will peck at our fuzzy slippers and anything that has some color on it especially red, including pictures on package labels and of course red toe nails. Perhaps he was pecking on the shoes not for dominance but to see if it was something edible?

They spent 20 minutes pecking at a picture on the plastic cover to some floor mats before they gave up.

The useage of words change in society over time. Dominate is less this.

This is why I don't dominate my roosters or use the term when speaking about dealing with them. ;)
I have an aversion to improper word use....and the misunderstanding that can engender.
(adversion is an obsolete word that actually meant to turn towards, not away from.)
Cock/erels need to be dominated, they can't really be humiliated as that's a human predilection.

I can tell you’re fascinated by all things chicken. Me TOO!! About everything I learn in life I learn the hard way. The experience is yours to enjoy. For my lifestyle I do not do Roo’s. When I scream “hawk” they have learned what to do. I have a Alfa hen who’s my right hand man. (So to speek). It’s fun to teach them. Our trust bond is great. They are my pets. I won’t keep a animal that will injure me my family or the other chickens. In my pie in the sky dream I would love a beautiful Roo strutting about watching over his little flock. Realize (i did) you may not be lucky. The injuries are REAL.

Ha! Get yer brain outta the gutter, as my mother used to say.
Just like a bird mounting another bird, dominance and submission is not always about sex. ;) I suppose you use 'rooster' instead of cockerel and/or cock too?

True. My Alfa hen learned real quick how to dominate the newbies. After a while she’d just have to pull the neck feathers (not hard at all) and they would either bow their heads and not move or they’d squat. She was not vicious at all. Now with that being said as the newbies grow the dynamics could change. Don’tcha’ just love chickens. :celebrate
