Strange Sleeping Arrangement!!!

I am so glad to hear that others have had their chickens sleep in a pile together. I cannot get any of mine to roost. I have traps out for the thing getting my chickens. I went and got 4 more traps to set out. We are thinking it may be a coyote, bobcat, mink, starving dogs??? We have a cat here at the house, and usually if another cat comes up, they end up fighting. We have a deer camera and I am about to go set it up. We will get some pictues of this bugger at least....I'll take the light outside tonight and try to get some pictures. I'll keep U all posted!!!!

Well last night we put up my husbands deer camera. This morning I went out at daylight, got the camera, just had to see. A RACCOON has been killing my chickens. He is really FAT too. He has been dragging them out from under the fence, because there is no way his fat rear can fit under any part of that fence. I have worked hard reinforcing and wiring that fence all over. Now, what to do about this problem since we know what it is?????

Do you have a large coon size live trap? If so put some soft cat food on the trigger of the trap.
Set it so when he use his hand to scoop the food up he hits the trigger.

This should do the trick.

Mine slept in a card board box.. until they were 6 weeks.

Once I moved them to bigger quarters, they still wanted the box. I left it in for about 3 days and then they found the roosts

My hens all nestle together expect three.

They sleep in the same position every night and the one in the middle spreads her wings and one wing goes over each chicken.

Very funny.

Hello All!!!!! Sorry it's been soooo long. Computer caught a PAV virus and it has been a doosey to fix. I caught a opossum eating my chickens. We fixed the chicken yard fence even more. That thing is as secure, i hope, as fort knox....

I still have traps out. We check the fence daily and some nights you can see where the critters are trying to pry the top and side wire aloose. We originally had a dog pen back there. So you had the dog yard made of dog wire, which now is chicken wire, but the bottom of the yard is lined with dog wire for about a foot deep all the way around the yard. So if anything wants to dig, they better get ready to tunnel. The top is chicken wire too. We have tied the top to the sides a million times is seems like. Lets keep our fingers crossed that this works.
My new chicks were 4 weeks old friday. I was so happy. We started out with 15 barred ply. rocks and I still have all of them. I know that with the temperature here in Louisiana getting up high, 11th day in a row now over 100 degrees, my chicks were miserable in the brooder. It is open but covered with wire in the top, but the sides are wood. So I went to my grandmothers house to see what I could fix up. She has passed on now for 3 years but her house and all is still there. I found my son's old square playpen. I cleaned it up, layed boards on top and put chicken wire on top of that. Secured the wire to the boards, and now my baby chicks have a COOL new daytime brooder. They LOVE it sooo much. One of the little hens perches up on top of her waterer. They are so cute. This breed that we got loves to peck for attention. At first I couldn't figure out why everyone of them loved to peck the mess out of my hands when I was close to them. Now, they just want to have attention. In the mornings when I am transferring them to the playpen, they take turns jumping on top of the waterer. They know that which ever one is on the waterer will be next to get into the playpen. When I put them inside they fly around in circles so fast. It is too funny. Thanks for reading today. God Bless you and yours!
