Strange thing in the nesting box

I found this in a nesting box today. It's roughly about as long as an egg, and is kind of rubbery. It seems like I remember seeing something about this years ago, but can't find it now. I'm guessing it's a "misfire" of the hen's reproductive tract, but...

Anyone know what it is, what might cause it? Thanks!
