Straub’s search for colored eggs

Pics
8 chicks are out 7 BYM and 1 Bresse. Several more on the way by the looks of things. I can’t keep track of the pips anymore because the chicks are all playing soccer with the unhatched eggs. IMG_6506.jpeg IMG_6502.jpeg IMG_6501.jpeg

Hatch day is officially here! So far 2 BYM are out. I can see 3 of the Bresse eggs have pips and 1 more BYM with a pip. I assume there are more pips that I can’t see from the viewing window. Sorry for the blurry picture but the window is covered in little chick hairs and moisture

Congratulations on these adorable babies!! :woot

It’s officially day 22 of incubation and i have 5 Bresse I’m told are from Greenfire Farms bloodline. I have zero experience with the breed but I can’t see any reason to doubt they are decent quality Bresse. I’m excited to see how they feather out and watch those legs turn from pink to blue in the next couple weeks

I believe I have 10 BYM from my flock. It’s hard to count them. They won’t hold still. There are still a couple eggs with visible pips but I haven’t seen any more progress for several hours on those ones. I’ll let things go until morning and see if any stragglers hatch out before I pull anyone out of the incubator for pictures

In other news egg production has been slowing down this week I don’t know if it’s the heat, broody hens, early molt, or some of each. Still no eggs from the spring pullets but I think at least one is close to laying. Pictured below are Cocoa my 2 year old Olive Egger in front and Mocha my 20 week old pullet I believe to be her daughter. She looks ready to lay to me but she’s still freeloading.

I moved 13 BYM and 5 Bresse from the incubator to the brooder this morning. One more Bresse did hatch early this morning but it’s having a rough start so I left it in the incubator to hopefully gain its strength. It was covered in slime and its belly button looks like it hasn’t completely healed over. I tried cleaning the slime off its feathers and I believe it’s coming around but still very unstable on its feet.

One of the other Bresse looks to have a couple curled toes and maybe just a touch of splay leg. I tried banding its legs with a pipe cleaner but that seemed like it made it limp more than not binding it so I removed the pipe cleaner and added vitamin to the water in hopes that it might resolve itself.

I’ll add a few pictures to this post and probably follow up with more in a bit. IMG_6527.jpeg IMG_6526.jpeg IMG_6523.jpeg IMG_6524.jpeg IMG_6525.jpeg IMG_6522.jpeg IMG_6521.jpeg IMG_6519.jpeg IMG_6516.jpeg
