Straub’s search for colored eggs

Pics
I finished the coop section of the breeding pin on Friday and locked the chicks into it so they could establish it as home. Tomorrow starts my weekend so weather permitting I’ll get the run portion added and cut a hole to mount a run chicken door. That should make this flock easier to manage until sometime late November when I move the extra birds on to new homes or the freezer.

I’m fairly confident that I have 2 Bresse cockerels and 3 pullets. The one cockerel has pretty crooked toes on one foot so I’ll try not to breed him but I’ll keep him around as a backup for now. I believe the toes are more incubation than genetic but I’m not sure. I’m going to try to breed to standard so I’ll be picky on who deserves to be in this pin when breeding season starts early in the spring.

Smokey and her babies have been spending days with the main flock but she still keeps taking them to the grow out pin at sunset. Her chicks all appear healthy but are growing slower than the other group. I’m not sure why they are slower to grow but I assume it’s because they do get a lot more treats in the main coop. They are probably filling up in cucumbers and watermelon and not eating as much crumble.
