straw bale pen for chicks around garden

I am thinking about putting straw bales around my veggie garden to keep my dog and the rabbits out. Is there any reason I couldn't let the chicks play in there on sunny days?

The straw won't hurt them, that's what i use in the floor of my coop .. but they will tear up your veggies . I wouldnt recommend it for that reason... Also if there is not roof covering they would be very susceptible to hawks.
