Yes, straw is a good material to use in the nest boxes. Make sure you have a good lip on the front to keep it all from falling out.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Straw will work in the nest boxes, but I personally prefer pine shavings as straw tends to mat when it gets wet. Also, according to some chicken owners, straw can harbor mites in the hollow stems. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.
