I picked up a pair of Silver Laced Wyandottes of unknown age but laying hens on thursday. One had really long and curled nails so after 2 days she was settling in just fine I trimmed her nails just a touch did not quick any of them she seemed stressed and she layed an egg in my hand and continued panting and all so I quit and took her back to coop. She is still acting stressed and panting not wanting to move. What should I do she wont eat or drink? She was up in roosting box early I got her on the roost and she stayed there. It is now roosting time. Should I just leave her be and see in the morning or try getting her to drink?

Well this morning she was still in roost but looked good I took her down she ate a little with coxing and drank a little I believe she is blind don't know if the stress did it or if has always been. She pecks the air before she finds what she wants. Maybe that is why her nails where long to begin with. I guess we will see how she does and keep everything in the same place, and play the wait and see game.

Do you have other chickens? If so, did you quarantine these 2 new birds?

Offer her some poultry vitamins that contain B vitamins and E. Also give her a source of selenium like egg or tuna.

Pecking the air, could be going blind, but it also can be an indication of the beginning of something neurological like wry neck. Since she seemed to be highly stressed, she may becoming symptomatic with an underlying illness (stress can bring out symptoms).

Do your best to see that she is drinking well and eating.
