howdy
so yall may have read my thread from yesterday dealing with my delinquent puppy
well here is a question regarding my old faithful assata an 8 yr old collie lab shep x
she is great we have an awesome relationship and if never do have to give her commands it can mostly be done with hand signals body language etc. i have grown up around the vet collage in guelph with grandfather as a prominent enough teacher that they have now named the small animal hospital there after him but this all besides the point
the one problem i do have with her is that she is extremely jealous and stressed by competition for my attention ie new puppy and now chickens
a cpl yrs back when she had puppies she got a bad scabby rash much like hot spots in her lower back by her tail and i attributed this to the extra weight she was carrying but when i kept one of the puppys it remained and moved to her belly and armpits etc. and got to be quite bad
alas at the same time i was just begining fatherhood too and my daughter was between 6 months and a year and it was all to much and puppy had to go
and low and behold within week rash was gone
now it seems to have reared its ugly head again and getting worse with new puppy and 20 chickens
i am about to start using the bach rescue remedy for pets but it is a few weeks in the ordering i also have been told mercury free? baking soda in her water will help with the stress
any other ideas out there?
thanks alot
as allways

I dont have any cures for you medicinal wise, but just offer some advice of spending some "daddy/doggy" time alone with your girl for an hour a day if you can -just the 2 of you

Pet her as much as possible during the day and make her feel special and that she hasnt been "replaced" by a younger, hipper version

Good luck to you - and give the old girl a hug from me!

I would take her to the vet first, have her scraped for red mites, and possibly allergy tested. It may not be stress at all, then again it might. Cover all your bases. Ecto-sooth is a medicated shampoo that will ease the itch of hot spots and helf with dry skin and scratching. You can also add an egg in her food to help with the skin issues, that is assuming she is not allergic to them.
Good Luck

one flea bite can cause that too.

My dog is allergic to their saliva and will get these red marks from him biting...hot spots.

treat for fleas even if you don't see any--because like I said, even one bite can set them off... it worked for us. plus the vet will give you steroids to get over the inflamation.

me,
g

thanks guys
i am my own vet mostly seeing as i travel for anything serios to vet collage
because of my inside comect there they just send me my shots etc and i do all the work saving me a tonne of money
a for alone time together that she get in spades most days i can bring to work with me (now with puppy killin chickens this may have to change)
and there is never a shortage of love for her ( especialy now that i only get my daughter on weekends right now)
she gets the "revolution" drops as prescribed treating both fleas and heartworm
and i have been bathing her in mild flea and tick shampoo regularly to keep infection down
i do have steroid cream too i just find rather than curing the problem it cures the symptoms as is the case with most modern med. i find
what are "red ticks" around here i only ever seem to have problems with deer ticks and then only in spring and fall or when out in the deep bush where there is lots of deer activity
always happy to hear from yall
ciao
