Since you have bugs present, you might be able to build some type of run for them that would keep the feral dogs and coyotes out--the electric fence possibly. I imagine if you have lots of weeds though, the fence would have to be monitored quite a bit to keep it from grounding out.
How about (I think similar to what NajJ said), putting the compost bin in their run? I've done that before, and they really love rifling through the compost. There should be all kinds of larvae and worms in there. I realize there is some risk, but I've found it to be worth it, to keep the birds occupied.
