Stromberg's or Cackle Hatchery?

Knowing that Strombergs is a "broker", I still ordered 25 Dark Cornish from them. They are reputable and have access to quality stock. Previous years they offered "breeder stock"which was quite expensive and I have also found "show quality" chicks for sale on their website recently. Hoping for some quality Cornish, shipping the 4th of May.

I didn't want to wait that long for chicks from Stromberg's so I got some Dark Cornish eggs from SandS. So far, of the 16, there are still 11 in the incubator that have chicks a growing. I may try them for something else, like Buff Brahmas since the only 2 I got to hatch appear to be cockerels.

I have ordered from cackle twice now. Once last year and once this year.

I will say my silkies I ordered are fairly nice. Not as poofy as SQ birds, however since mine are free-range I'd rather them be able to see. They are much nicer then the silkies I have from TSC. We also ordered Sumatra, and they look pretty good. We ordered Phoenix however the hatch wasn't good, so they did ship something else instead. They look like dorkings to me..but cackle doesn't offer them..so who knows I think they gave us 3 extra(2 silkie, 1 sumatra), and we did loose a total of 3 chicks over a few weeks time.

This year we got 5 buff orpingtons, and 12 Easter Eggers. They just arrived yesterday however everyone arrived healthy, active and alert. So far so good with them. They sent us 2 extra (E.E and a red chick of some sort).

For now i'll be sticking with cackle. I've had good luck with the chicks from them, they are fine for my "back yard flock" but also are not that bad of quality from the little research I've done.

I considered getting eggs from sands but went for the more sure thing with the chicks from strombergs. I am very curious on the type difference and it would be great to compare the two groups. Best of luck on the hatch and post some pictures of the chicks please! Is there a Dark Cornish tread on" Breads, Genetics and Show"? Maybe we can start one.

All of my phoenix but the rooster in my avatar came from cackle, and they're excellent birds. They've won class champion/ reserve class champion multiple times. If my cackle boy would have been in condition the last show, he probably would have won reserve.

nice to hear that cackle has a good reputation - since I can drive by there and pick up birds on my way home from work...
