Stronger Wings

Does anyone else give their birds some dog food mixed in with their food for the protein. My grandfather has been doing this for years with his gamecocks to help their wings when they are growing back their feathers but I just think it's weird.

I've heard of people doing this. A lot of guys feed meet scraps also. Protean is important for gamecocks. I use conditioner feed that is like 18% protean.

the flock raiser has 20% and game bird I think has 24 or 28% they don't suggest dog or cat food for chickens, but some people do it in winter to sup. the loss of bug protein.

Dog food is a high quality protein source that is easy to handle. You can also use fishmeal for same purpose although it is not as easy to handle as dog food.

It takes a lot of protein to grow feathers. Animal protein is a better source than most plant proteins for methionine. That's one of the amino acids from protein. Feathers have a lot of methionine in them and the chickens need it to grow their feathers.
