Hi all, I have a chick that is maybe 12 hours old, hatched under a broody hen. Previous 5 eggs hatched on Thursday...there were 4 eggs remaining until this one hatched this morning (I am not sure if this chick was delayed or on time, as a few days into hen sitting she stole an egg and had rubbed the marking another...so 2 were at slightly different incubations) all was well, chick was drying under momma earlier. I just went out to check, and found this chick, at the beginning of the nest, gasping and struggling on its back.

I brought the chick inside, am warming it currently. Still seems listless with eyes closed. With stimulation, chick with chirp and move. Any hope other than keeping warm and offering raw yolk or corn syrup?

Was the chick rejected or stepped on by the mother? I’d try feeding some sugar water for energy
Have you got a lamp or incubator to keep it warm in?
Is it able to walk with stimulation? May still just be getting used to life
Pictures may help

Not sure , as mom is still sitting for two delayed hatching eggs. No external trauma that I can see. Currently warming up the brooder plate. Chick has been bundled with human help and a microwave pet heat pad. Chick is much more alert since warming, and has ingested a little corn syrup mixed with egg wolk, when applied to the beak. I will check to see if it is able to stand/walk now that it is warmer.

That’s good it’s more alert, maybe it got cold if the mother hen rejected it. Gasping could mean internal injuries but if that’s the case there’s not much to do
But being more alert is definitely a good sign

🤞does not seem to be gasping once warmed either. I'm hoping she just got lost out from under mom and got chilled...that and the newness of life. I will certainly give it the best chance I can. Does seem better able to stand on its own. Hoping a little TLC will do the trick. Thanks for the quick response!

Let me know how she goes, will you give her back to the hen? If you do I’d keep a close eye on the hens behaviour
No problem I try to help when I can
