This may sound stupid (in my opinion), but this question is driving me CRAZY!

Why do ducks tilt their head and look up at the sun/sky?

I thought maybe it was just a Pekin thing as I have seen Squirt, my Pekin drake and I saw pics of Pet Duck Boy's Sunny do it. But lately our little ducklings are doing it too!

So what's the point behind it? Or is it just " a duck thing"?

They are checking for flying predators - hawks, buzzards, airplanes... lol They see something that might be a threat so they check it out to see if they need to run for cover or not.
It could be just a bug flying by and it catches their attention or something. Its a duck thing.

I've heard somewhere it's how they detect birds of prey, and they stare them down to make sure whatever it is doesn't swoop down on em. I read that somewhere...either way, I love it when they do it.

My ducks always do that when an airplane flies over head. lol... Which is very often when they are outside in the back yard considering i live not far from two major airports. lol

Our's only do it when the sun is out though... and that's exactly what they stare at too! Dang ducks going to make themselves blind lol. Don't feel like making duck glasses -.- bad enough both me and shadowhills have to wear them, don't need our pets to need them too >.<
