Good afternoon....i am new to backyard chickens and havea flock of 8....which will end up being 6 because 2 are roosters (they will have to go.live with an uncle in Conroe) we LOVE OUR CHICKENS! They are very young and my husband has them nicely trained already :0) we are building a bigger coop as we have outgrown the little starter one. How do you control the flies???????

Flies are tough. Some people use herbs or even those fly bags. I use sand in my coop and run. Sand repels flies. They like earthy, damp soil. Sand is too dry for flies. Here is a nice thread on sand if you are interested in it...https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/444759/got-sand-you-should

Sand is soft on the feet of the birds, stays dry when wet, absorbs chicken poop and smells, repels the flies, and what is really nice is you can hose it down in the summer time and it keeps the birds really cool. Cool feet means cool birds. Always cover your run when using sand.

Make yourself at home and we do welcome you to our flock!

I'm loving this site. My sister can keep her mum's net. It's BYC all the way for me! X
